Daily Multivitamins May Help Seniors Stay Independent

Multivitamin benefits

Being able to do daily tasks without feeling too tired or sick is important for a good life as we get older. New research shows that a simple daily multivitamin might help keep that independence.

Study Shows Better Function After Three Years

Researchers followed more than 16,000 people who were at least 60 years old. Some took a multivitamin every day, while others took a placebo pill that looked the same but had no vitamins.

After three years, the group that took the multivitamin reported feeling stronger and more able to do everyday chores compared with the placebo group.

Why the Vitamin Might Help

The scientists think the benefits could come from better brain health, improved blood flow, and more stamina. They said a multivitamin is a low‑risk addition to a healthy lifestyle, but it does not replace good food or exercise.

Details of the Trial

The trial, called the COcoa Supplement Multivitamins Outcomes Study (COSMOS), also gave some participants a cocoa extract supplement. The cocoa extract did not change overall functional scores, though it helped a small group with heart failure.

Functional health was measured with a questionnaire that asked about symptoms like fatigue and the ability to walk, climb stairs, or do housework.

What the Findings Mean

Better functional scores mean seniors may keep dressing, bathing, walking, and doing chores without feeling held back by tiredness or swelling.

The researchers stress that vitamins are not a substitute for a balanced diet or regular activity. Anyone thinking about starting a supplement should first talk to a doctor.

Next Steps

The study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Although the results are promising, they are still preliminary until they appear in a peer‑reviewed journal.
