A new paper says a future NASA station on the moon should have a special lab that keeps any space germs away from Earth.
Scientists are planning bigger trips that could bring back rocks and dust from the moon, Mars and other places.
Moon Quarantine for Space Samples
The study, printed in the journal Ambio, recommends sending all material found beyond Earth to a secure lab on the moon first. It should not go straight to Earth.
Robots would look at the samples. This limits the chance that a person could be exposed or that an unknown organism could escape.
Unknown Biological Risks
Even though we have never found alien life, bringing a new kind of organism to Earth could cause big problems.
History shows that tiny creatures from elsewhere can upset whole ecosystems, just like invasive species do today.
"Research on invasive species shows that an organism placed in the wrong environment can spread wildly and cause lasting damage," says expert Ricciardi. "That is why we must be very careful with any extraterrestrial life we might discover."
More Space Missions, More Safety Needs
Because space activity is growing fast, strong safety rules are more important than ever.
The Moon as Earth’s First Biological Shield
Finding life beyond Earth would be a huge scientific win. But the researchers say we should first handle any risks on the moon.
"The moon could become our first line of defense against alien microbes," they write.
