Weight‑loss medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have changed how doctors treat obesity and diabetes. New research shows that artificial intelligence (AI) can help spot side effects people talk about online.
The study, published in Nature Health, looked at thousands of Reddit posts. The researchers said clinical trials find the most serious problems, but they may miss what patients notice in everyday life.
“Trials are the gold standard, but they are slow,” one scientist explained. “AI can look at many posts quickly, so we can see new concerns faster.”
AI and Reddit Show New Concerns
The team did not claim the drugs caused every symptom they found. Instead, they highlighted patterns that deserve more study.
Online communities act like a neighborhood grapevine. People share experiences that rarely reach a doctor’s office.
As social media grew, the amount of data became harder to manage. Large language models like GPT and Gemini now let researchers process this information quickly and consistently.
What the AI Found
About 44 % of the Reddit users mentioned at least one side effect. The most common were stomach problems.
Some symptoms were less expected. Roughly 4 % talked about reproductive changes such as irregular periods or heavy bleeding.
Other users reported feeling unusually cold or hot, chills, and fever‑like sensations.
Fatigue was the second most‑mentioned complaint, even though many clinical trials did not highlight it.
Looking Beyond Reddit
The scientists want to study other platforms and languages to see if the same patterns appear worldwide.
They believe AI‑driven analysis can give early warnings about drug safety, especially for products that spread quickly and may not be tightly regulated.
“The whole point is speed,” one researcher said. “When a drug becomes popular overnight, fast information is valuable.”
