Cholera is a dangerous infection that makes people lose a lot of water through diarrhea. If it is not treated, it can be deadly.
Protein Helps Keep Cholera Away
Scientists at the University of California, Riverside found that a diet high in protein can stop cholera bacteria from growing in the gut. The proteins that worked best were casein, which comes from milk, and wheat gluten.
How the Study Was Done
Researchers gave infected mice three kinds of food: one rich in protein, one high in sugar, and one high in fat. The mice that ate the protein‑rich diet had far fewer cholera bacteria in their intestines. Fat did not help, and sugar gave only a small benefit.
Why Protein Works
Casein and wheat gluten block a tiny needle‑like tool on the cholera bacteria called the type 6 secretion system. This tool is used by the bacteria to inject poison into nearby cells and to out‑compete other microbes. When the tool is blocked, the bacteria cannot take over the gut.
A Cheap Alternative to Medicine
Cholera is still a big problem in places with limited clean water. The usual treatment is to give fluids, and doctors may use antibiotics to shorten the sickness. Overusing antibiotics can create drug‑resistant germs.
Changing the diet does not cause resistance, making it a safe and low‑cost way to protect people, especially in poor regions.
What This Means for People
Although the research was done in mice, the scientists think the same effect could happen in humans. They plan to study how protein‑rich meals change the human gut and whether they can fight other harmful bacteria too.
Eating safe proteins like dairy casein or wheat gluten could become a simple step to lower the risk of cholera and perhaps other infections.
