Can CBD and CBG Help Treat Fatty Liver Disease?
Scientists have found two cannabis compounds that do not make you high – cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). These chemicals might lower the amount of fat in the liver and make the organ work better.
The study was done by a team at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. They discovered that CBD and CBG help liver cells store extra energy and clean up waste more efficiently.
Why Fatty Liver Matters
Fatty liver disease, also called MASLD, is the most common long‑term liver problem worldwide. About one out of three adults has it. It is linked to obesity, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
Doctors usually suggest eating healthier and exercising more. However, many people find it hard to keep these habits, and there are very few approved medicines.
How CBD and CBG Boost Liver Energy
Using modern lab tools, researchers saw that CBD and CBG do more than just reduce fat. They trigger a process called “metabolic remodeling.” One result is a rise in phosphocreatine, a molecule that acts as an emergency power source for liver cells. This backup helps the liver stay strong when faced with a high‑fat diet.
Cleaning Up Cellular Waste
The study also showed that the two compounds wake up cathepsin enzymes inside lysosomes – the cell’s recycling centers. When these enzymes work again, the liver can break down and remove harmful fats and other waste.
Scientists measured big drops in bad lipids like triglycerides and ceramides. Lower ceramide levels are good because they are tied to insulin resistance and inflammation.
Different Strengths of CBD and CBG
Both CBD and CBG helped keep blood sugar steady and improved how the body handles glucose. CBG, however, showed stronger effects on several health markers. It cut body‑fat mass, raised insulin sensitivity, and lowered total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol more than CBD.
What the Researchers Say
"Our results reveal a new way that CBD and CBG boost liver energy and waste‑clearance systems," said Professor Joseph Tam. "This dual action could make these plant compounds useful tools against fatty liver disease."
Looking Ahead
The findings are promising, but more studies are needed to see if they work in people. If future research confirms the benefits, CBD and CBG might become part of new, plant‑based treatments for fatty liver and related metabolic problems.
